Convert student scores to percentages with the Calculation Assistant
In another How To, student scores were converted to percentages using the Calculaton command. Here is a similar example, but with the Calculation Assistant command.
Often columns have student scores that are marked out of totals that are not out of 100. Sometimes it is convenient to also have the scores as a percentage.
Suppose you have a column named Week 1 Quiz that has a column maximum of 15. To convert the scores to be out of 100 you can do steps like these with the Calculation Assistant command.
- Choose the Calculation Assistant command in the Help menu.
- Choose Next to skip the Introduction.
- At the Calculation Columns step, click in the box on the left of the Week 1 Quiz column name, so it is checked and choose Next.
- At the Store Scores step, leave the Yes, store the scores in a new column option selected and choose Next.
- At the New Column step, enter the new column name. For example, if the column to be converted is Week 1 Quiz you may want the new column to be named % Week 1 Quiz
- Leave the maximum score of the new column at 100 and choose Next.
- At the Calculation Type step, select the Scale the scores to a new maximum mark option and choose Next.
- At the Classes step, leave the Yes, affect all classes option selected and choose Next.
- At the Check Details step, review the calculation details and choose Next.
The scores converted to a percentage are stored in the new column.
- The Calculation Assistant leads you through the steps of setting up the calculation. In many cases is easier than using the Calculation command, although it is useful to be familiar with both methods.
